African American Community

Safe Circle

Safe Circle is an educational outreach program tailored to meet the needs of African American women by connecting traditionally underserved women with the existing service of the Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation. The program is designed to provide access to breast health information, screenings and support services in a culturally relevant, acceptable manner. Trained African American volunteers reach out to women in their communities to empower them to act on behalf of their own breast health. The program is a balance of psychosocial, financial and physical support.

SHAPE IT

SHAPE IT is a community-based intervention that fosters partnerships among community-based organizations, community members and health care providers. This program aims to implement strategies that ultimately reduce disease and death from prostate cancer and stroke among African American men age 35 and older in North & West Philadelphia. The goal is to reach men with educational programs while encouraging and empowering them to develop long-lasting and meaningful relationships with healthcare providers. The SHAPE IT framework includes large group sessions for general education, small group health sessions for targeted health messages, and one-on-one decision counseling. At all sessions, men are offered blood pressure screening, and are reminded of the importance of establishing a relationship with a provider.
