Calcutta House Joins PHMC's Family to Expand Reach to HIV/AIDS and Homeless Communities

PHILADELPHIA – Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), a nonprofit public health institute that creates and sustains healthier communities, announced that Calcutta House, an organization that provides one-of-a-kind services to homeless individuals living with HIV/AIDS, has joined the organization as an affiliate.

Calcutta House is the only program of its kind in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that offers housing, nursing services, rehabilitative, psycho-social services and life skills and development training to homeless individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

"We're thrilled to welcome Calcutta House to the PHMC family," said PHMC President & CEO Richard J. Cohen. "Calcutta House's established legacy of providing quality housing and supportive services for homeless individuals struggling with HIV/AIDS aligns perfectly with PHMC's history as a Healthcare for the Homeless designee and experience in providing physical and behavioral health to the region's homeless population. Together with Calcutta House, we look forward to expanding the depth and breadth of services we can offer to this population and our communities."

Since its founding in 1987, Calcutta House has grown from a five-bedroom facility providing hospice services for those at the end stages of HIV/AIDS to a place where homeless individuals living with HIV/AIDS can find assistance and support as they rebuild their lives. Today only one third of Calcutta House residents use hospice service, the rest utilize recovery assistance so they can become strong enough to live on their own.

"Calcutta House is pleased to align with PHMC's family of affiliates and programs, and long-standing legacy of serving the region's most vulnerable populations," said Kim McGrory, Executive Director of Calcutta House. "We have similar guiding principles and I look forward to the new possibilities this relationship will create for the homeless communities we serve."

Calcutta House will benefit from programmatic and infrastructure support from PHMC while it continues to serve its residents. For PHMC, Calcutta House's expertise expands PHMC's capacity and reach in residential care for the homeless population. In the future, PHMC and Calcutta House will look to align services that will enrich Calcutta House's current offerings for residents and broaden the continuum of care for both organizations.
