Philadelphia Comprehensive Highway Traffic Safety Public Education and Awareness Campaign: "Street Smarts"

Street Smarts, Philadelphia's comprehensive highway traffic safety project, promotes injury prevention by conducting a community-wide public information campaign which focuses on the proper use of safety belts and child safety seats; improved pedestrian safety; prevention of underage drinking and driving under the influence; motorcycle/bicycle safety; safe driving characteristics; aggressive driving; and school bus safety. The primary goal of the project is to decrease the number of avoidable deaths and/or injuries associated with traffic-related crashes and reduce the severity of those that do occur. This goal is achieved through the conduct of an ongoing city-wide public education and awareness campaign focusing on special events, business and community programs, school programs, day care center presentations, and a city-wide media campaign. The project coordinates activities with other organizations having similar goals to broaden the campaign's visibility and effectiveness.
